AGE Reader
Introduction
AGEs typically accumulate gradually in slow-metabolizing tissues over the course of a person's life. But in patients with conditions such as diabetes, kidney failure and cardiovascular disease, the process occurs much faster. AGEs also accumulate rapidly in the presence of oxidative stress. These accumulated AGEs play a key role in the development of diabetes and its complications. The level of AGEs in tissues reflects the level of glucose metabolism and is an important predictor of cardiovascular events and (prediabetic) diabetes.
